The resort - comprising of three historic communities - was originally a high summer grazing area and frequented, usually at night, by smugglers moving good between Switzerland and Italy. The resort has grown considerably over the years but retains much of its original charm. One certain improvement is the access road which now has a long snow tunnel where it runs at the side of the lake. Many years ago this road was often blocked in winter after heavy falls of snow but now there is access throughout the winter months.
