Imagine a skiing paradise with 115km of groomed slopes, ranging in  height from 1800m to 3000m and served by 32 lifts with a long winter season and snow-sure cover. Look no further than the excellent resort of Livigno which the brochure describes as a "little pearl nestling in the heart of the Alps". It is located between the Stelvio National Park and the Swiss National Park and centuries ago the farmers used to have their alpine rest shelters here when crossing between Italy and Switzerland.

This resort is hugely popular with the British as it has something for everyone. It lies in a sunny alpine valley high in the mountains close to the Swiss and Italian borders and enjoys "duty-free" status so commodities such as fuel, chocolates, alcohol and souvenirs and quite a lot cheaper than elsewhere.

If you are driving - and the journey from Calais takes around 10/11 hours - you can fill-up before you depart at the end of your holiday and enjoy great savings.

Livigno is for skiers and with 115km of downhill runs and 32 lifts there is amply room and little queuing. The skiing is on either side of the mountain with a long black run dropping some 3,200ft back to the village. In fact 20 per cent of the slopes are described as black (difficult); a further 43 per cent red (medium); and 37 per cent blue (easy). The resort is ideal for families with good instruction for children; it is also good for beginners.

The riders find here the ideal runs, most suitable for freestyle with hollows, parabolic curves, drops and jumps, all kind of fun but always safe.A team of young freestyle fans looks after the daily care of Halfpipe park ( Easy and Pro) and all different runs.

Livigno, for the third year running, was appointed as “best snowpark” by Snowbox Awards, anItalian competition which rewards the best job done among various resortsThe village of Livigno tends to spread itself out along the main valley and there is a very good selection of restaurants, bistros, bars with some modern, excellent shopping facilities. In fact no fewer than 250 stores offering a vast selection of products - many of which are local - with a local craft fair at Christmas with lots of specialities to sample. There is no shortage of "gift" ideas to take home with you at the end of your holiday. Livigno has a large pedestrian zone so guests staying at hotels or apartments will need a special permit issued by the hotel or apartment owner prior to arrival which will be accompanied by a route map.
