The Coach Alternative

August 2007

Coach travel to the Alps of Europe has been fashionable for a number of years for adults but really started as an idea for transporting parties of schoolchildren for an inexpensive winter holiday.

A number of companies operate ski coaches and this form of transport has become luxurious with reclining seats which become beds for overnight comfort, as well as couriers, tea/coffee-making facilities and two drivers to ensure safety.

One of the first companies to be involved - and to stay involved - has been Interski which is based in Nottinghamshire. Each winter Interski transport more than 12,000 students to their main resorts of Courmayeur, Pila Aosta and La Thuile in northern Italy via ferries from the Port of Dover to Calais. The modern 45-seater coaches are equipped with reclining seats toilet and washroom facilities, DVD players and climate control.

With two drivers they cover the distance to the Alps across Europe in around 10/11 hours.

At the resorts of Courmayeur, La Thuile and Pila Interski have their own instructors.

Interski have an additional arrangement for the Classics coach transport for the 2005-06 ski season. We have agreed details with a new operator based near Carlisle who will operate four new Bova Future coaches in a combination of Interski and coach operator distinctive livery. These four vehicles will work alternate weeks for the period December - mid April inclusive. They were recently acquired and are top of the range executive Bova models with enhanced specification for client comfort and they will supplement our existing Alliance fleet of executive coaches.

The vehicles currently seat 45 passengers, providing extra legroom for greater comfort. Other features will include an additional TV monitor, DVD players, the usual drinks facilities and the provision of toilet and washroom as standard. They also have an improved climate control facility, enabling drivers to respond to separate and specific areas of the coach, as required. These new, more powerful coaches, together with the usual complimentary Interski pillows, blankets, comfort packs and breakfast service, will enable Classics clients to travel to resort in state-of-the-art comfort.
